Every night has to be covered

The gap is what gets noticed. A file showing hotels for the first eight nights of a twelve-night trip raises the obvious question about the other four, and "I hadn't decided yet" is not the answer an officer wants from someone claiming a planned trip.

That includes transit nights and any night you intend to spend with family. Staying with someone is fine; not documenting it is not.

Refundable bookings, genuinely held

You should not be paying for non-refundable accommodation before a decision, and no reasonable mission expects you to. Free-cancellation reservations exist precisely for this, and a booking that is genuinely held under your name with a real reference is what the evidence requires.

What does not work is a generated confirmation that fails verification. Missions check booking references directly with the property or platform often enough that treating it as unlikely is a bad bet — and a verification failure is recorded as misrepresentation, not as a clerical error.

Staying with family or friends

• An invitation letter from the host giving their address, their relationship to you, and the dates.
• Proof of the host's status in the country — citizenship, residence permit or visa.
• Evidence they actually live at that address: a tenancy agreement, property document or recent utility bill.
• Where the host is also funding the trip, their own financial evidence, because a host who cannot support the visit is worse than no host at all.
• Some countries use a formal sponsorship or accommodation certificate obtained by the host from their local authority; where that exists, it replaces an informal letter.

Matching the rest of the file

The accommodation has to sit in the right city on the right dates. An itinerary that has you in Munich on the 9th and a hotel booked in Berlin for the same night is the kind of contradiction that gets a file read much more carefully from that point onward.
