IELTS Preparation

IELTS is the most widely accepted English test and the easiest to sit the wrong version of. Booking Academic when your route needs General Training, or a standard test when it needs UKVI, wastes the fee and the weeks.

Academic, General Training, or UKVI

Academic is for university study and professional registration. General Training is for migration and work routes, and for some vocational courses. The listening and speaking sections are the same; reading and writing differ substantially.

Separately, some UK immigration routes require IELTS for UKVI — the same test content, taken at a centre approved for Secure English Language Testing, producing a result the Home Office will accept. A standard IELTS result is not interchangeable with it, and this catches out applicants every intake.

How the bands work

You get a band from 0 to 9 for each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, plus an overall band that is their average rounded to the nearest half.

Most institutions set both an overall requirement and a per-section minimum, and the per-section minimum is what people miss. An overall 7.0 with a 6.0 in writing fails a requirement of "7.0 overall, minimum 6.5 in each" — so the preparation has to lift your weakest section, not your average.

Where marks are actually lost

  • Writing Task 2, where candidates answer a question adjacent to the one asked.
  • Writing Task 1 Academic, where the data is described without being summarised or compared.
  • Speaking Part 2, where the long turn runs out after forty seconds.
  • Reading, where the issue is pace rather than comprehension — the paper is not generously timed.
  • Listening, where a correct answer is lost to spelling or to a word-count instruction.

How we prepare candidates

A diagnostic full test first, so the work targets your actual weak section instead of the one you assume. Then format drilling, timed practice under real conditions, and marked writing with specific feedback against the assessment criteria rather than a grade.

Speaking is practised out loud with a person, because it is the section candidates most often prepare for silently and then underperform in.
