Tuition before permit

Swedish universities require the first instalment of tuition to be paid before they will confirm your place fully, and the Migration Agency expects to see that payment as part of the permit application.

This means committing real money before you have any immigration decision. Refund policies exist for refused applications but vary by institution, so the terms are worth reading before you transfer anything — this is the one destination where the financial risk sits at the front of the process.

Maintenance, month by month

Sweden requires you to show a set amount per month for each month of study, typically for ten months a year, held in your own account. It is a monthly calculation rather than a single lump sum, and the required figure is revised annually.

Funds held by a parent do not satisfy it in the way they might elsewhere — the Migration Agency expects the money to be available to you. A scholarship covering living costs can substitute where it is documented.

Applying

• Application is made online to Migrationsverket, not at an embassy counter.
• A permit is issued for the length of the course, with renewal required for longer programmes and study progress checked at renewal.
• Comprehensive health insurance is required for courses under a year; longer courses bring you into the Swedish system.
• Processing times are published and are long enough that applying immediately after admission is the only sensible approach.

What you get for it

Master's programmes are widely taught in English and Swedish universities are strong in engineering, technology and design. There is no restriction on hours worked during study, which is unusual, though finding work without Swedish is harder than the permission suggests.
