Universitaly pre-enrolment

Before applying for the visa you must complete pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal, selecting your university and course. The institution confirms your application through the same system, and the embassy checks that confirmation.

The window for this is set annually and it is firm. Missing it means waiting for the next academic year regardless of how good your admission is, so the portal date, not the university deadline, is the one to plan around.

Recognising your qualification

Italy needs your foreign degree formally translated into its own system. Historically this meant a Declaration of Value issued by the Italian mission; increasingly a CIMEA statement of comparability serves the same purpose and is usually faster.

Which one your university wants varies by institution. Confirming that before you commission anything avoids paying for a document your university will not accept — a common and irritating waste.

Tuition, and the DSU scholarship

• Public university tuition is banded by assessed family income, so a Pakistani family income often lands in the lowest band.
• Regional DSU scholarships add a maintenance grant, and in many regions a fee waiver and subsidised accommodation and meals.
• DSU applications have their own deadlines, separate from admission and usually earlier than students expect.
• The income assessment requires documented evidence of family income, properly translated and legalised.

Language and after arrival

Italian-taught degrees generally expect B2, and some universities test it. English-taught programmes are widespread at Master's level, particularly in engineering, design and economics.

After arriving you apply for a residence permit within eight working days. It is a hard deadline with real consequences, and it is the step students most often arrive unaware of.
