Two routes, two bookings

A short-stay Schengen visa is for tourism, visits and brief business trips, and it covers a stay of up to 90 days in any 180. A national visa is for a longer stay such as a degree, work or reunion with family, and it is issued for Portugal specifically with its own document list.

The two sit under different categories on the booking system. An applicant who books the short-stay slot for a study plan arrives with a file that cannot be accepted, and the appointment is gone.

Study and work applicants

A national visa file is assembled before the appointment, not at it: an admission or contract, proof of accommodation, evidence of funds, and the clearances the route requires. The slot should be booked when these are close to ready, because national visa files often take longer to assemble than applicants expect and the calendar is not the bottleneck it is for tourists.

Documents issued outside Portugal frequently need to be legalised or translated before they are accepted. Allow for that time in the plan rather than meeting it at the counter.

What to have settled before booking

• Your purpose and length of stay, which decides the category.
• Whether Portugal is your main destination, if the trip also covers other Schengen countries.
• Passport validity and photographs to specification.
• Insurance that covers the entire short stay, or the documents the national route asks for in its place.
